Research and Development

At the Consortium for Robotics, Intelligence, and Automation Technologies (CRIAT), we recognize the essential role that innovative research and development (R&D) plays not only in advancing technologies, but also in formulating effective policy frameworks, standards, and guidelines. We are committed to the interdisciplinary exploration of robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation technologies, as well as the policies that govern them.

R&D Areas

These R&D areas guide our work, but we always remain open to new directions and opportunities. Innovation thrives on diversity of thought, and we encourage our community to propose new ideas and projects that align with our mission. Our research and development areas are twofold:

Technological Development

We work to advance research in robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation, including areas such as robot design, control systems, human-robot interaction, machine learning, natural language processing, decision-making systems, process automation, intelligent systems, and Industry 4.0 technologies.

Robotics

Our robotics R&D encompasses robot design and control, human-robot interaction, and the use of robots in various sectors such as healthcare, industry, and education. It also includes the development of autonomous systems and the study of multi-robot systems.

Artificial Intelligence

We work on multiple aspects of AI, including machine learning techniques, natural language processing, decision-making systems, and AI ethics. We also explore ways to make AI systems more interpretable, transparent, and accountable.

Automation Technologies

Our R&D efforts in automation focus on process and industrial automation, smart grids, and automated vehicles. We also study the human factors in automation and how automation impacts productivity, safety, and job satisfaction.

Policy and Standards

We commit to the development of comprehensive and adaptable policy frameworks, standards, and guidelines. These efforts cover a wide range of topics, from privacy and data use to the ethical implications of AI and robotics, with the aim to ensure safe, equitable, and beneficial deployment of these technologies.

Integration Guidelines

We develop guidelines that support the responsible integration of robotics, AI, and automation into various sectors. This includes guidelines on privacy, security, interoperability, and user experience.

Implementation Standards

Our work on standards covers the technical, ethical, and societal aspects of implementing these technologies. These standards aim to ensure that the technologies are reliable, safe, and beneficial. We also work on standards related to data governance, algorithmic transparency, and fairness.

Policy Frameworks

We contribute to policy frameworks that govern the use of robotics, AI, and automation technologies. These frameworks address a range of issues, from data privacy and security to intellectual property rights and the impact of these technologies on employment and society at large.

Our Approach to R&D

Interdisciplinary Focus

Our R&D initiatives promote research projects that intersect robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation. Beyond technological advancements, we also focus on the development of new models of governance, standards, and ethical guidelines for these emerging technologies.

Collaborative Innovation

CRIAT leverages the collective knowledge and skills of our diverse member base. We believe that collaborative innovation leads to better technology and policy outcomes, as it enables us to approach complex R&D challenges from multiple perspectives.

Ethical and Policy Considerations

Our commitment to responsible innovation guides our research efforts. We dedicate resources to developing and refining policies, ethical guidelines, and standards for the technologies we focus on. This holistic approach ensures that technological advancements are balanced with societal interests and ethical considerations.

R&D Projects

Our R&D projects span various stages, from idea generation, feasibility studies, policy drafts, prototype development, testing, and validation. These projects are often conducted in partnership with our member organizations and external collaborators.

Get Involved

We welcome the participation of researchers, academics, professionals, and organizations in our R&D initiatives. This can involve proposing new research projects, contributing to ongoing ones, or providing expert insights.
