Pioneering the Future of AI: Introducing CRIAT, a New Global Consortium for Ethical Technology Adoption

Oakville, Ontario – June 30, 2023 – In an era marked by significant advancements in AI technology, Bruno Sousa, a tech entrepreneur, AI policy advisor and former Green Party Candidate, has taken a decisive step forward. Today, he launched The Consortium for Robotics, Intelligence, and Automation Technologies (CRIAT).  Spawned from years of in-depth exploration into AI technology and policy, this organization aspires to become a global authority on the ethical and responsible application of AI and related technologies.

Sousa’s journey with CRIAT began in late 2017 when a Chinese robot named Xiaoyi [sh ow yee], developed by Xiaoice, a subsidiary of Microsoft, passed the National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) in China, a feat previously believed to be exclusively human.  This breakthrough prompted Sousa to delve into AI policy literature worldwide, planting the seeds for his white paper and the genesis of CRIAT.

“CRIAT stands as an unrestrained, unbiased and neutral force,” said Sousa.  “Our vision is to promote interdisciplinary dialogue, encourage thought leadership, and foster innovative solutions while remaining independent of governmental, academic, or corporate influence.  A community of members, industry stakeholders, and donors will fuel our mission to create a safer, more inclusive future with AI.  We will collaborate to promote responsible and ethical AI practices that positively impact society and the environment.”

Sousa’s white paper, “Transcending AI Policy Boundaries: Comparative Insights and the Case for Global Collaboration,” is a rallying call for a unified, effective approach to handling the growth and application of AI.  It invites governments, academia, businesses, and the public to join CRIAT to tackle AI’s challenges and drive tech-enabled innovation.

“Together, we’re building a formidable network of AI pioneers, innovative startups, and the brightest minds in the industry,” Sousa stated.  “This alliance will expedite the responsible adoption of transformative technologies and usher in a more equitable, sustainable world.”

Currently, CRIAT is rallying a distinguished group of founding members.  Over the next quarter, it will extend invitations to influential individuals, organizations, and governments to join the consortium.  We have tentatively scheduled the first Virtual General Meeting for November 21, 2023, during which we will vote to adopt a constitution, values, and crucial definitions.  This meeting will mark an important milestone in our journey towards establishing a strong foundation for the organization.

Sousa added, “The launch of CRIAT marks the beginning of a new era of meaningful collaborations.  By harnessing the power of advanced technologies, we can create a better world for all.”

The Consortium for Robotics, Intelligence, and Automation Technologies (CRIAT) is an independent, globally-oriented organization committed to guiding the responsible adoption of AI and related technologies.  Founded in 2017 by Bruno Sousa, and launched in June of 2023, CRIAT is a hub for ethical practices in the tech world, fostering innovation and cultivating a collective impact network.
